Gluten Free review of AM Resort Dreams Playa Mujeres Golf and Spa Resort in Cancun, Mexico.
If you’ve been around here for very long, you know we love to travel and Mexico is one of our favorite spots. We have found a resort chain that does an AMAZING job with food allergies and sensitivities. That chain is AM Resorts. We have been to the following resorts: Secrets Maroma, Secrets Capri, and Secrets Cap Cana.
In early 2021 we took the kiddos with us to Mexico. We decided to go to this resort for a number of reasons. First, it has a huge water slide, big lazy river and 5 pools! Our kids LOVE water. Second, it has a lot of different restaurant options so we’d be able to try different things and make everyone happy. Third, it was right next to an adult only resort so we could drop the kids off at the Explorer’s Club (kids club) and walk next door for a kid break. And finally, we wanted the kids to experience an all inclusive resort and room service!
Dreams Playa Mujeres Resort is just north of the Cancun airport so it was a short van ride to the resort. We used this company for the airport transfers. We have used them a number of times and love their customer service.
Upon arrive the resort did a health check on all of us and welcomed us with champagne and lemonade for the kids. Once we got to the room the kids immediately changed into their swim suits and we hit the pool. We enjoyed 5 nights at the resort and were able to do so much.
Here are all the restaurants at the resort:
- Dolce – ice cream parlor and coffee bar
- Fusion – Japanese hibachi
- Gaucho Grill – Brazilian steakhouse
- L’Etoile – French Cuisine (13+)
- Maris – Seafood
- Mezes – Mediterranean food
- That’s a Wrap – Salad and sandwiches
- Tides – grill and snacks
- Tres Colores – Mexican
- World Cafe – Buffet
- Room Service
Since we went during Covid, the resort was only at 30% capacity. This meant that not all the restaurants were open while we were there and not all of them were open every night. But we were able to try a number of them during our trip.
Gluten Free Review of the restaurants at Dream Playa Mujeres Resort
DOLCE
The ice cream and coffee bar is open 24 hours a day. Our kids LOVED this place. They literally got ice cream cones at least twice a day. They thought it was the coolest thing to order their own ice cream cones. For gluten free options you can have the ice cream without a cone (just ask them to use a clean scooper), the coffees, and they did have gluten free pastries like cheesecake available.
FUSION
The Japanese steakhouse has 2 hibachi tables and a number of regular tables. We went to this restaurant twice, once at the hibachi table and once at a regular table. This is the only restaurant that you need a reservation for if you want to eat hibachi. The food was great and the show was super fun! All of my gluten free food was prepared separately in the back but it was safe so I was totally fine! I ate: sushi, fried rice, and chicken hibachi. The second time we went, I even asked for some fried rice to take back to my room for my evening snack.
GAUCHO GRILL
The Brazilian steakhouse was good but not great. The manager walked me around to show me what I could eat and what meats were safe. I mostly had veggies and steak. The kids liked the sides buffet but didn’t really like the meat.
MARIS
We loved this place for lunch and breakfast. The views were great and it has a ton of good options for our family. Our kids loved the kids food here and ate all the gluten they could get their hands on! My gluten free breakfasts included scrambled eggs, bacon, and pancakes. The pancakes weren’t great but I could 100% tell they were GF! Lunch was great with beautiful salads, shrimp cocktails, burgers, and fajitas. They brought out special gluten free corn chips for me to use with the salsa and dips. We ate here the most.
One lunch I ordered a burger with gluten free bread and fries. They said to make the fries gluten free they had to fry them in a separate pot and it takes a long time. I said no problem, I can wait. Turns out it took most of our meal to get them. So I just asked for a to-go plate and then enjoyed my fries in our beach cabana. They may be some of the best fries I’ve ever had. It could also have been the view!
TIDES
This is a small grill that is open for lunch most days. It was a good spot for a mid-afternoon snack for our crew. The gluten free options are limited here so I just ate a salad. The kids loved the nachos and quesadillas.
TRES COLORES
Our family loves to go to Mexican restaurants and this one did not disappoint. There were a ton of Gluten free options on the menu and there was a Taco bar on the patio that we loved. I had tacos, amazing sopas and desserts here. We ate here twice. I had special gluten free chips here too.
WORLD CAFE
This was a great breakfast stop for us. There were so many options that everyone could find something they liked. My go-to were the omelets, bacon, and fruit. They also made a killer cappuccino. The kids loved french toast and gluten-filled pastries.
ROOM SERVICE
The room service menu is limited for gluten free but has a ton of staples for the kids. We ordered room service every night. Yes, that means we had 2 dinners every night. It was wonderful! Gluten free options were salads, a shrimp dish, burgers, and cheesecake. One night my burger came with gluten free bread and another night without bread.
Overall Resort Review
This property was beautiful! We were upgraded to a master suite so we had a huge room with a living room, extra bathroom and 2 huge balconies. We had fabulous view of the beach and the resort. The cleaning protocols for Covid would blow away anything we’d seen in the US. We felt 100% safe the whole time.
The evening entertainment was fun for kids and adults. We enjoyed a couple of the shows.
The staff work uber hard! Bring cash to tip them with. Yes it is an all inclusive resort but they don’t make a ton of money and they work really hard to make your time enjoyable. We tip around $1-3 per drink, $10 -$20 per meal, and then give money to the cleaning people, delivery workers and anyone else that we interact with. This is not required but much appreciated. If you tip heavy early, you drink will never be empty.
Our kids loved the Explorer’s Club. They went for a few hours most days. They did crafts, games, treasure hunts, rock climbing, trivia and more. We were surprised how much they enjoyed it. There is a different schedule each day so they could pick what they wanted to do.
When we traveled you had to have a negative PCR Covid test to get back into the US. This was provided for free at the resort and was super easy. The whole process took 20 minutes and we had the results later that day. This wasn’t a big deal for us, but you do what works for your family.
We love traveling with this chain so much we already have our next trip scheduled for December 2021 to a Secrets resort we haven’t been to yet. If you are open to traveling, the AM Resorts offer amazing places to take your food sensitive, food allergy, celiac family.
Bonus – whenever we travel I get asked “What do you take when you travel”, so here is my go-to list.
What to pack to an all inclusive resort
- Legal documents – the rooms have a safe so you can keep them locked up once you arrive
- Cash – I bring around $75-100 a day in $1 and $5 bills
- Gluten free snacks for airport
- At least 3 swimsuits per person
- Swimsuit coverups for the girls and t-shirts for the boys. Some restaurants require a coverup for lunch.
- Shoes – flip flops, tennis shoes, nice shoes for dinner. Men must have closed toe shoes at some restaurants at dinner.
- Dinner outfits – ladies need long shorts, dresses or nice tops. Men need long pants and collared shirts for some restaurants
- Light jacket or sweater as it gets cold at night
- Sunscreen – plan on a bottle a day
- Sunglasses
- Hats
- Beach bag
- Bug spray
- Optional – pool toys, googles, plastic phone case, snorkel (I love this one!), extra money for excursions off the resort
Happy and safe gluten free travel!

Pre pandemic I used to take a lot of cruises. Cancun is a special favorite of mine. I’ve never actually gone to a Mexican resort, but this article has been very encouraging. Thank you, such great info!

Thank you for your in-depth review. My daughter has celiac, she’s seven years old. We are planning to go to a Dreams resort in Cabo soon. Hopefully she will have an amazing time, without getting sick.

Hi there! Curious about your post diagnosis symptoms if you happen to have gluten? I ask cause we’re thinking of traveling to Playa Mujeres with our daughter who gets constipated when exposed. Wondering how safe it will be for her. Thanks! Kandis.
imaceliac says
I didn’t have any issues and I’ve been to many Dreams/Secrets resorts.
Whatever helps her at home should help her when you travel. Any OTC meds to help her with issues, just pack in case. But I’ve always been good to go.

Hi there! We’re planning a trip to Dreams Playa Mujeres this coming week. Did the sushi restaurant use a gluten free rice vinegar and soy sauce? Also, curious to learn more about what your symptoms are if you are exposed to gluten? Thanks for this blog, you’re the reason we booked a trip to Dream Playa Mujeres.
imaceliac says
Yes, they had GF soy sauce and made my food in the kitchen in a separate area.
When I get glutened, the issues are all over the place. I hope you love your trip – we did!

My wife & son are both Celiac. We are looking at this resort for Spring Break 2023. My son will be 7 and as a kid is obviously limited on what he will eat. Do you know if they can do gluten chicken nuggets or fish sticks?
imaceliac says
We loved it. They did not have GF Chicken nuggets that I know of. But fries and burgers were available.
Kandis Fay says
Sorry I commented below to help give you a clearer picture of the hotel options and knowledge of celiac.

Hi Ashley! We went last December. My celiac daughter was age 4 when we went. She ate eggs for breakfast, loved the nachos for lunch along with virgin strawberry daiquiri or pina coladas, and plenty of dinner options. Also, even though the ice cream store was a little confused about if the ice cream was made in a facility with gluten we stuck with vanilla and brought our own cones (they were great about washing the scooper in clean water) and she never got sick. They give you a card to give to the host of every restaurant that you can write down your allergy or dietary needs on.
Depends on when you go and who you talk to, some staff are more accommodating than others. One day the nachos were gluten free the next day they “weren’t.” Some staff confused vegan with gluten free too.
Our trip was for my husband’s birthday and they special made an AMAZING birthday cake with corn flour. Might be the best gf cake I’ve ever tried. It was an extra cost of course. You can reach out to the hotel in advance. They would email photos of ingredients to me so I could be prepared.
Overall it was a great experience and a very memorable trip. I hope you go and enjoy!
