Eating out is one of the biggest challenges of someone living a Gluten Free lifestyle. Imagine going to a restaurant where EVERYTHING is Gluten Free, it is also locally sourced, fresh, and amazing! Primal Food and Spirits is the newest restaurant to hit Durham, NC and it also happens to be 100% Gluten Free.
They literally opened their doors to the public yesterday July 10th. I got a message on Facebook that they were open and immediately texted our babysitter and called to make a reservation, this was one opening night we were not going to miss!
The atmosphere of the restaurant is very warm and welcoming. There is tons of wood and organic material used to decorate. The bar was very cool and they have a beautiful wood wall. They also cook over a wood fire so you can smell the fire as you walk in.
The wait staff were very attentive and knowledgeable. Our waitress gave us a brief story about the restaurant and assured us everything was Gluten Free and local. The menu has a number of great options to choose from of which all is safe to eat! It is an al la cart menu so side items are extra with your entrees. I do want to say the serving sizes are not very large for the entrees so it is best to order a number of the smaller dishes to go along with your entree. I recommend an appetizer, a salad and side item per person.
We started with the bread and butter. It sounds so simple, but when is the last time you had fresh Gluten Free bread with herb butter at a restaurant?! It was fabulous!
For our entrees we ordered the Grass-Fed Tri Tip Steak and the 30 Hour Braised Short Ribs. The steak was very good and had a great wood fire taste to it. However the short ribs will blow your mind! They were melt in your mouth good. We could have eaten 3 dishes of these!
For our sides we ordered the ratatouille and the roasted yukon gold steak fries. Being a potato lover, the steak fries were my favorite. They did not come with a dip so I asked our waitress to bring something she thought would go well with the fries. She brought the most amazing mustard aioli I’ve ever had. The potatoes were the perfect compliment to this sweet, garlicky sauce. We could have drank the aioli with a straw.
We finished our meal with the flourless chocolate torte. It was a tasty fudge cake with a sweet caramel sauce.
Primal is a must visit for any Gluten Free eater. It is a safe environment to enjoy a great meal. The price for all the items listed above plus tip and a glass of red wine was $80. This isn’t bad for a nice dinner out, especially when you know it is safe! Hubby and I will defiantly be back!
They are working on their website so check their Facebook page for updates.
