Admittedly I have jumped on the mason jar craze. It’s so funny how good ole mason jars are popular again. Pinterest is filled with craft ideas and recipes using mason jars. Personally I adore them!
They are super fun to use. If you aren’t using them to decorate your wedding or party you can just them as your lunch container.
My current obsession with mason jars is to use them for mason jar salads. Here is the basic layout for a successful mason jar salad.
Layer 1 – dressing
Layer 2 – hearty vegetables (peppers, carrots, onions, broccoli, celery, etc)
Layer 3 – softer vegetables (tomatoes, mushrooms, avocados, etc)
Layer 3 – cheese
Layer 4 – protein (chicken, ham, turkey, beans, etc)
Layer 5 – greens (spinach, lettuce, kale, etc)
The possibilities are endless with this simple formula. The ultimate goal is to separate your greens from your dressing. I follow this mason jar salad formula weekly for my work lunches. When it comes to eating them I just dump the contents of the mason jar onto a plate or into a bowl. The contents come out in the perfect order for eating, placing the dressing on top.
As a side note I highly recommend using the wide mouth quart jars. They hold a ton of food and it is easier to get the food in and out compared to the regular width mouth jar.
On weeks where I have my act together I can make a week’s worth of salads at one time. That’s right folks, salads last up to 7 days in the jars! To be honest I have tested this due to poor planning and the salad was still awesome on day 7! Just keep the jars refrigerated until you are ready to enjoy them.
So if you want to add a fun and healthy way to eat your lunch, dive into mason jar salads!
Enjoy!
